Afterthoughts: Uncertain Relationship Society

Title
01: 曖昧是什麼都沒有發生你卻什麼都記得。

After watching Heiward Mak’s short films (from sister’s persistent recommendations), I became interested in watching her other works. This is how I ended up watching 曖昧不明關係研究學會 (Uncertain Relationship Society).

First, the way the film was cut was very interesting —rather than begin a flowing movie, the story was told in a non-chronological manner, weaving between segments that touched on specific topics. This way of storytelling along with the editing style made it a refreshing film. Apart from the story and the editing, the actors/actresses also played a role in creating this refreshing feeling. I have not watched most of the actors/actresses in this film (other than in the short films) and a notable mention must go to Anjo Leung, whose acting really captivated me. Another thing that I really enjoyed in the film was the song. The song, 說說, sang by PlayTime, was really catchy and almost seemed like an advertisement song itself  (*winks*).

Moving on from my initiate impressions, let’s talk about the story itself and the topic of the movie. 曖昧 (sadly, I don’t think there is an English term that accurately reflects its meaning) is a quite a different topic. Most love stories don’t really centre around 曖昧 as the characters usually end up together real quick or it’s very certain (to the audience and the characters themselves) that they like each other. I guess a good way to describe 曖昧 is as the initial stages of falling in love— you know, when you don’t really know if the other person actually likes you but you also feel like there’s something going on. 曖昧 is just a conflicting feeling— sometimes it can be sweet and other times it’s tiring. At times you’re certain but other times you’re not too sure, and the movie portrays this uncertain feeling so well.

The two storylines in the movie that resonated the most with me were: 林逸民 (played by Anjo Leung) and 李寧’s (played by Venus Wong) segment; and the story between 李彩華 (played by Yatho Wong) and 何葉 (played by Lam Yiu Sing). These two stories accurately reflected my experiences and also helped me in working out some thoughts that I had on love and relationships.

LCWHY

Overall, this movie was quite enjoyable and I really think one can get a lot out of it. Also, did I mention that you can watch this movie is on Youtube? Check it out!
